In Europe, fungi protection is also widespread and is actively promoted by the European Council for the Conservation of Fungi - ECCF, a commission of the European Mycological Association - EMA. 33 countries have compiled a red list of fungi and some of them have already reached the second, third or even fourth revision. The red lists of individual European countries include around 5500 species, of which 10 to 20 percent are classified as endangered. Some countries have also compiled regional red lists and action plans for the protection of highly endangered species and habitats (e.g. Great Britain, Finland, Norway, Sweden).

Globally, 57 fungal species are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.10 of these globally endangered species also occur in Switzerland.
