Certification in Field Mycology ¶
Starting in 2025, a two-tier certification system for field mycological knowledge will be established in Switzerland. The certification is intended to promote the training and recognition of species identification skills for fungi and to ensure the long-term preservation of mycological expertise. The certificates are open to anyone interested in having their knowledge of fungi assessed and verified according to uniform and transparent criteria.
The requirements for the Level 1 Field Mycology Certificate: “Amanita” have already been established. To earn the certificate, candidates must demonstrate knowledge of 200 fungal species, be able to describe about 25 genera, and possess basic knowledge of fungal morphology, ecology, and diversity. In addition, knowledge of certain plant species relevant to mushroom identification is required (e.g., important mycorrhizal partners). The Level 1 species list primarily includes common mushroom species from all ecological groups (mycorrhizal, saprobic, parasitic), as well as selected rare and conservation-relevant species.
The officially valid lists (species list, genus list, and plant list) in German, French and Italian are available for download below.
The first Level 1 exam is scheduled for fall 2027. The content and lists for Level 2 are currently being developed and will be published at a later date. Further information on the regulations, exam format, registration, and the requirements for obtaining a certificate will also be provided.
